When I travel internationally, I always try to book a night or two in my arrival city, even if it’s not my final desination, to give me time to recover from the flight, get on the new time zone, and have half a day or so to explore the city I flew into. When I traveled to Switzerland last fall, I landed in Zurich and though I planned to eventually continue on by train to Lucerne, I booked a night at The Dolder Grand in Zurich for that very reason (and also because I just had to check out this magnificent hotel), and it was the perfect start to my Switzerland itinerary.

Let me start by saying that you could (and should!) spend more than one night in Zurich and have plenty to do. It’s an exciting city with lots to explore, and even makes a great base for your stay in Switzerland as it’s so easy to take day trips thanks to the many accessible options by train. I only planned for one night though, and we tried to hit as many highlights as we could in our short time. I’ll get into that in a separate post on what not to miss in Zurich, but for now, let’s take a moment to appreciate the grandeur of The Dolder Grand.

The hotel sits on a hill overlooking the city, giving its guests the best views of Zurich, the lake and mountains. The location is prime, just 20 minutes from Zurich airport, and a quick (and complimentary) shuttle ride into the city center.

Inside the hotel you’ll find an opulent, but not overdone lobby, leading to a beautiful lounge where you can relax with a coffee, afternoon tea or cocktails by the fireplace. While there are plenty of culinary delights to experience in Zurich, you can also dine at the hotel. The Restaurant, the hotel’s gourmet, 2 Michelin Star option, serves lunch and dinner. Saltz is the hotel’s more relaxed dining option, and is open all day, including breakfast. (Don’t forget clients who book through The Hollyday receive complimentary breakfast daily!) And don’t miss night time cocktails in the swanky bar.

Definitely take advantage of the 43,000 square foot spa facility, compromised of a pool with panoramic views, 18 treatment rooms, two spa suites for ultimate relatxation, workout room and a mind-body studio. A little exercise and a massage is the best way to beat jet-lag!

Off property, guests can enjoy a plethora of activities nearby such as golf, horseback riding, a tour of Old Town, hiking trails outside of the city, and more.
