A denim jacket should be a staple in your suitcase.

Welcome to the first installment in our new series wherein we help all of you with your packing lists by reminding you of the things you will get plenty of wear (or use) out of no matter where you’re headed. And #1 on the roster? The denim jacket. Groundbreaking, I know. But when I sat down and began making a list of items I ALWAYS pack, this was honestly the first thing that came to mind. Other than when packing forĀ a location where multiple feet of snow and near zero temps await, I always reach for one of my denim jackets. Going to the islands? Sure it will be warm, but it might be breezy at night. Throw on aĀ dress, drapeĀ one of these baby blues over your shoulders and you’re off to dinner. Traveling during fall? No brainer. Spring? Obviously. Even in the winter, this is one of the warmest jackets I own and so comfy to wear on the plane and throughout the entire trip. What IĀ love most right now about this wardrobe staple are the updates it’s getting–from studs and raw hems to embroidery… not that IĀ don’t love the good old timeless classic. As versatile as they are, you really can’t have enough. So shop our picks below, and don’t forget to add it to your packing list.

Everyone should have at least one. If you’re throwing one on for a casual evening, go with one with a darker wash like this one, which can look a bit dressier than the lighter washes. During the day, go with a casual cool light wash. Want to make the classic a little more interesting? Wear it with a pair of different-colored denim, Canadian tuxedo style.

Throw on one of these over a tee or a slinky black slip dressĀ and you’ll effortlessly look like you really DGAF.

Embroidery is everywhere these days, and we love it onĀ a denim jacket. How fun are these by Frame, which come in multiple versions patched with differentĀ names and phrases.
