HOTEL REPORT: IL BORRO – TUSCANY

By 06.28.19. No Comments
Il Borro, Tuscany | The Hollyday

There is no shortage of luxury wineries and villas in the Tuscan countryside, so when it comes time to book your trip to this belvoed region in Italy, how do you choose? For a property that has a little bit of everything, consider Il Borro, a stunning estate rooted in history and now owned by the Ferragamo family. Ferruccio Ferragamo and his son Salvatore brought it back to life in the early 90’s and soon began welcoming guests from all over the world who travel to experience it’s beauty. I was lucky enough to stay here in fall 2018, and got to see for myself (and my clients) just how special this place really is.

THE ESTATE

The entire Il Borro Estate takes up around 800 hectares (almost 2,000 acres), with plenty of terrain to explore. Beyond just your typical Tuscan retreat surrounded by vineyards, Il Borro’s 38 accommodations are spread throughout a preserved and restored ancient medieval village. In addition to luxurious and charming guest accommodations, you will discover a piazza, stoned-paved alleys and charming and authentic artisan shops.

LOCATION

Il Borro is located in the heart of Tuscany, less than 40 miles from Florence,
37 miles from Siena and 12 miles from Arezzo.

THINGS TO DO

Guests have multiple dining options on property – Osteria del Borro is the more formal option, offering a gourmet menu and, of course, an excellent wine selection. The restaurant has beautiful views overlooking the medieval village. For a more laid-back setting, you can wander down to the Tuscan Bistro (pictured above), which serves delicious Tuscan fare inside or al fresco for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

No trip to Tuscany is complete without a proper winery tour and tasting. Il Borro’s winemaking tradition dates back to 1760, when the estate was under Medici rule. Don’t miss the Vino & Arte Gallery, which traces the history of the estate and it’s winemaking. The Arte exhibition takes you through a journey of ownership from the Medicis to the Ferragamos. You will continue with a viewing of some incredible works of art, from Picasso and Mantegna to Goya and Warhol. End with a tour of the estate’s new and old cellars, and a taste of Il Borro wines.

Balance out the wine and delicious Italian food (no carb-cutting in Italy!) with some time in the Il Borro Spa, a trip to the gym or a yoga class.

Enjoy the air of the Tuscan countryside by partaking in the outdoor activities offered, including country hiking and biking trails, horseback rides, truffle hunting, tennis courts, and a golf course. Special bespoke activities can also be arranged, from Ferrari test drives to helicopter tours and hot air balloon rides.
